Officials from Nigeria’s spill response agencies have reported a spill of approximately 100,000 gallons of oil resulting from a loading accident involving the Total Energies-owned FPSO ‘EGINA.’ A monitoring and cleanup operation is currently underway.

On the morning of November 15th at 6:27 AM, Nigeria’s National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) disclosed that the FPSO EGINA experienced a loading export hose failure, leading to the discharge of around 3,000 barrels of oil.

Charles Ebereonwu, Country Communications Manager for Total Energies, emphasized that the incident was not a massive leak, and containment efforts have successfully managed most of the spill. He assured that no shoreline communities were affected, and production remains unaffected.

Situated approximately 90 nautical miles off the coast of the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, the EGINA FPSO’s oil slick is not anticipated to reach the shore, according to Nigerian authorities.

The Nigerian Maritime Agency (NIMASA) reported that Total Energies is employing dispersants to break up the oil slick. Dispersants are chemicals designed to facilitate the cleanup of oil spills by breaking down oil molecules.

EGINA is the largest FPSO in Total’s fleet and is presently the largest FPSO installed in Nigeria. Weighing 220,000 tons with a length of 1,100 feet, the FPSO, at its peak, has produced over 200,000 barrels of oil per day, representing more than 10% of Nigeria’s entire oil production.
