It was reported that Italy will participate with a frigate in the multinational security mission established under the leadership of the USA against attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
According to news in the Italian press, the Ministry of Defense decided to deploy the FREMM-class Virginio Fasan frigate, which serves in the Italian Navy, in the Red Sea within the scope of the multinational mission established under the leadership of the USA against the attacks of the Houthis on ships in Yemen.
It was stated that the Fasan frigate was normally planned to go to the operation “Atalanta” to support the fight against sea pirates in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean in February, but it would first participate in this mission in the Red Sea.
It was stated that Italy’s decision to send frigates was taken after Defense Minister Guido Crosetto met with his American counterpart Lloyd Austin yesterday.
It was noted that Crosetto said that the reason behind the decision to send the frigate was to prevent the increase in prices in the raw material market by protecting the Red Sea route.
Meanwhile, La Repubblica newspaper reported that it was possible that Italy would send a second ship in addition to the Fasan frigate.
Giuseppe Conte, leader of the 5 Star Movement (M5S), one of the opposition parties, criticized the decision to send frigates to the Red Sea and said, “They are dragging us into another conflict.” he commented.
