Berge Bulk is launching a new castlemax bulk carrier named the “M/V BERGE OLYMPUS”. The ship has been retrofitted with four sails that use favorable winds to reduce emissions. Berge Bulk has described the ship as being the most powerful “sail cargo ship” in the world.

These innovative sails, known as BARTech WindWings and developed by Yara Marine Technologies, each span an impressive 20 meters in width and 37.5 meters in height. Their adjustability allows for optimized fuel consumption, enhancing the vessel’s overall efficiency.

With four such sails, the ship has a total surface of 3000 square metres to generate force. These sails can save up to 6 tonnes of fuels per day, this is around 20% of the fuel consumption of the ship. The resultant reduction translates to an average daily emission decrease of about 19.5 metric tonnes.

The ship is to be deployed on a route between Brazil and China, a course that is known for favorable wind conditions.

In addition to the WindWings, the “BERGE OLYMPUS” is equipped with a shaft generator system that taps into the main engine to generate electric power, eliminating the need for auxiliary engines while at sea.
