China’s shipbuilding industry maintained its global lead with double-digit increases in production and new orders in the first five months of 2023.
The country’s shipbuilding output rose 15.4 percent to 16.47 million dwt, according to data from the China National Shipbuilding Industry Association. In the same period, new orders increased by 49.5 percent to 26.45 million dwt. The revenue of the companies in the sector increased by 31.3 percent to 137.64 billion yuan.

The country’s shipbuilding production reached 16.47 million deadweight tons (dwt) in the first five months of this year, up 15.4 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data from China’s National Shipbuilding Industry Association.
The Association announced that new orders in China’s shipbuilding industry increased by 49.5 percent year on year to reach 26.45 million dwt. Business of the companies in the sector improved as 74 companies followed by the Association achieved 137.64 billion yuan (approximately 19 billion USD) revenue, an increase of 31.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
