Chinese bulk carrier QUEEN LAND arrived at Uglegorsk anchorage, Sakhalin, Russia, on Sep 26. Reportedly, she dragged her anchor after storm hit western coast of Sakhalin, and in the morning Oct 3 concerned locals alerted emergency services, reporting big cargo ship looking like she’s beached. MRCC Sakhalin confirmed ship’s dangerous approach due to strong wind and high waves. According to track, she shifted positions and most probably, dragged anchor, drifted, but managed to stabilize, at 10-20 meters depths, with ship’s 7 meter draft. As of 0720 UTC Oct 3, the ship was holding on against storm 0.5 nm off coast – she’s in ballast, no doubt using engine, so it’s now question of weather, and engine reliability. Uglegorsk tugs are of no help in such weather.
