In a written statement made by the Panama Canal Administration, it was stated that the passage of ships through the Miraflores cover of the canal was temporarily stopped as a security precaution, and that the Panama Canal Fire Department responded to the fire and no loss of life was experienced in the incident. It was stated that the other hatches in the canal were not closed to transportation and are currently operating smoothly. There are three sets of hatches in the Panama Canal and only small boats pass through the Miraflores hatch.

The Panama Canal connects 180 sea routes reaching 1,920 ports in 170 countries. According to official data, 2.4 percent of commercial voyages in the world in 2021 passed through the Panama Canal.
