Bulkship Management, an Oslo-based ship manager specializing in geared vessels, has announced a contract with BERG Propulsions to ensure compliance with EEXI (Energy Efficiency for Existing Ships Index) regulations for their ships. The contract involves implementing the “EPL for EEXI” power limitation solution on ten of Bulkship’s ships engaged in trade within the Gulf and Caribbean waters of the United States.
The “EPL for EEXI” power limitation is a software-based solution, particularly suitable for ships requiring moderate adjustments to meet the IMO’s EEXI requirements. The “EPL” integrates with Berg’s proprietary MPC800 control system to limit propeller pitch.
The Berg EPL (Engine Power Limiter) operates by sending signals to the ship’s controllable pitch propeller (CPP), reducing the brake torque until the engine power falls within the required range. No additional modifications or equipment are required. The solution is currently undergoing approval from the classification society.
Berg conducted a pilot technical assessment on the OSLO BULK 6, an 8,036 dwt bulker, demonstrating that their MPP950 CPP system enabled the vessel to meet the EEXI requirements. Following successful sea trials, the system’s performance as an effective EPL solution received approval from DNV. As a result, Bulkship has confirmed orders to install Berg’s EPL on nine more of its vessels.
Magnus Thorén, Sales Manager for Energy & Efficiency at Berg Propulsion, emphasized their preference for accurately governing engine power rather than directly limiting engine RPM. He also highlighted the solution’s benefit of providing an override function for emergencies when full engine power is necessary. The override function is password protected, and its usage is logged for reporting purposes.
