Greenpeace has joined the City of Piombino and the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) in their efforts to block the installation of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the PIOMBINO’s seaport. The opponents argue that the installation could potentially harm the marine ecosystem.
Government has approved the project and the state-owned gas company “Snam” is pushing for the FSRU to be installed in PIOMBINO by April. The Italian government is eager to reduce its dependence on Russian gas and is looking to import 8 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from African, Qatari, and US suppliers by the winter of 2024. The existing terminals in Italy won’t be able to handle such a large import, but with the FSRU in PIOMBINO the country would be able to handle extra 5 billion cubic meters of LNG.
The city’s mayor, Francesco Ferrari, has filed a lawsuit against the FSRU project, seeking to halt its progress pending further study due to environmental concerns. WWF and Greenpeace share these concerns and have joined the city’s efforts to halt the FSRU installation. The hearing for the lawsuit is scheduled for March 8th.
