Grimaldi’s Green Giants Begin Service on the Greece-Italy Freight Line

Starting on June 26th, the Italy-based Grimaldi Group will introduce two new ships, namely the “ECO CATANIA” and the “ECO MALTA,” into service. These ships, known as the “green giants,” will commence freight transportation between Italy and Greece.

Operating on the freight line connecting Greece and Italy, these two ships will replace the current “Eurocargo” class vessels. These vessels belong to the “GG5G” class; each ship can carry approximately 7,800 linear meters of freight, equivalent to about 500 trailers and 180 cars. This represents almost double the capacity of the previous class of short sea ro-ro ships utilized by the Grimaldi Group.

Grimaldi claims that the new ships consume the same fuel as their smaller predecessors despite their larger capacity. This achievement is attributed to implementing of highly innovative technological solutions that optimize the vessels’ performance, both operationally and environmentally. By operating at the same speed and fuel consumption as the previous class of ships, they effectively reduce CO2 emissions per unit transported by approximately 50%.

Furthermore, these ships are equipped with mega lithium batteries that are recharged during navigation through shaft generators, along with 350 m2 of solar panels installed on board. Thanks to the batteries, the ships can operate with zero emissions in ports.
