heroic vessels perform dual rescues in remarkable 18-hour timeframe

In a remarkable feat, two tankers registered under Overseas Holding Group (OSG) swiftly diverted their vessels to answer two distress calls in a span of just 18 hours.

The first heroic rescue unfolded on the evening of May 30th when the tanker “OVERSEAS SANTORINI” received a distress call from a sailing vessel in the middle of the treacherous Atlantic Ocean. U.S. Coast Guard Norfolk and two other vessels alerted the OVERSEAS SANTORINI to the dire situation. The sailboat had encountered severe weather conditions, leading to a hull breach and water ingress. The crew, tired and potentially injured, desperately needed assistance. The closest land, the Azores, lay nearly 800 miles to the east.

Without hesitation, the OVERSEAS SANTORINI crew altered their course, navigating 30 nautical miles to reach the distressed vessel. Utilizing their maximum speed, they successfully rescued a family of four, ensuring their safety amid perilous circumstances.

In a second incident, the 46,665 dwt vessel, “OVERSEAS NIKISKI,” swiftly responded to a distress signal issued by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Clearwater. The distress call pertained to two stranded individuals adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. With the vessel losing both propulsion and steering capabilities and facing an approaching tropical depression, the OVERSEAS NIKISKI made a course adjustment and executed a successful rescue, saving both individuals from the looming danger.

Patrick O’Halloran, OSG’s Chief Operations Officer, expressed immense pride in their seafarers for their selflessness, dedication to preserving life, and unwavering professionalism during these challenging and stressful situations.
