The Indian Government has unveiled plans to provide green hydrogen at the country’s largest ports by 2035. The “Harit Sagar” Guidelines, introduced to reduce carbon emissions per tonne of cargo by 25% by 2030 and two-thirds by 2047, outline these new initiatives.
The 12 major ports in India will each adopt the guidelines in their manner, while the government has established specific requirements. By 2030, all 12 ports must have LNG bunkering facilities, followed by green hydrogen or green ammonia bunkering provisions by 2035. PARADIP, KANDLA, and TUTICORIN will spearhead these changes.
Moreover, the government mandates that 50% of vehicles and equipment at these ports should be electrified by 2030, with a target of 90% by 2047. An increasing proportion of power must be from renewable sources, with a 60% requirement for green electricity by 2030, escalating to 90% by 2047.
The 12 ports must establish electric vehicle charging stations within the next three years to support the Green hydrogen transition. Additionally, incentives may be offered to encourage drayage operators to switch to cleaner fuels such as CNG, green hydrogen, or battery electric power.
