India is reportedly in the process of constructing 24 cargo ships for Russia, with the completion target set for 2027. The economic sanctions imposed on Russia in response to the war in Ukraine have compelled them to seek new alliances with shipbuilding nations, in order to support their struggling shipping sector.

Construction on the first four ships is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2024 at the Goa shipyard, with all 24 vessels to be completed by 2027, and delivered to Moscow. These ships encompass a variety of types, including chemical carriers, bulk carriers, and containerships.

Dmitry Dubovik, the Captain of the Caspian International North-South Integration Club, disclosed that the ship construction deal was reached last week on November 2nd during the Astrakhan International Forum in Russia. Dubovik further emphasized that these ship constructions are part of a broader effort to expand their shipping operations in the Caspian Sea.

The Caspian Sea, being the largest landlocked body of water globally, is experiencing a surge in shipping activities. Its shores touch Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan, making it a vital component of Russia’s revised trade routes in the aftermath of the sanctions.
