International investigation requested on Beirut Port explosion - News2Sea

The United Nations (UN) announced that an international investigation should be started about the big explosion that took place in the port of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, 2 years ago.

In a written statement made by UN experts, it was emphasized that this event was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions, while “Nothing has been done so far to find out why the explosion occurred.” evaluation was made.

In the second year of the explosion, the Lebanese people continue to wait for justice for the victims. “We call for an international investigation to be initiated without delay.” expression was used. It was shared that the UN called for the Lebanese government to investigate the incident after the explosion, but the process was blocked several times.

“The relatives of the victims appealed to the international community for an independent investigation to be launched under the auspices of the Human Rights Council, in the hope of getting the answers that the Lebanese authorities failed to provide through an investigation conducted by a multilateral system.” In the statement, it was demanded that the UN Human Rights Council take into account these calls and do what is necessary.

On August 4, 2020, in the Beirut Port, a fire broke out in the warehouse containing the explosives, and then a very strong explosion occurred that shook the whole city. It was stated that approximately 200 people died in the explosion, more than 6 thousand people were injured and 300 thousand people were displaced due to the explosion.

The grain silo, which has become the symbol of the explosion in the port, could not be demolished in a controlled manner until today due to the unfinished investigation and was left in ruins.
