Yesterday, at around 11.20 am, action was taken with the notice received from the ship belonging to DFDS Shipping and Transport AŞ to the Main Search and Rescue Coordination Center (AAKKM) of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Immediately after learning of the incident, the ship’s captain and the company were contacted and the crew were asked to protect themselves in safe areas. The captain and staff, who controlled the ship, locked themselves in various areas and took them to safety. Minister Uraloğlu also followed the information from AAKKM instantly and received information about the situation in the region.
International authorities were contacted after the ship’s captain detected that the fugitives were circulating with sharp tools from the cameras. It was requested to depart for Naples Port of Italy, which is the closest place to the point where the ship is located. At that time, the Italian security units began planning the operation to be carried out on the ship.
The Italian police were allowed to enter the Galata Seaways vessel, which approached the territorial waters of Naples at around 17:00. However, it was not possible to enter the ship by normal means. Italian security forces requested permission to land on the ship by helicopter. Under the coordination of Minister Uraloğlu, the necessary permissions were given by AAKKM, which coordinated the operation, and first of all, the safety of the Turkish crew was ensured.
The security forces who landed on the ship tried to find the fugitives for a long time in their hiding place. Dog teams were also included in the ongoing search efforts. After the search efforts, the stowaways on the ship were caught by the Italian security forces.
