Turkish ship sinks in Shanghai

It is learned that OMEGA, a 48821 DWT bulk carrier belonging to Ankara based Gamma Denizcilik, sank after colliding with another 18000 DWT vessel off the coast of Shanghai.

It is learned that OMEGA, which was built in 2004, 189.96 meters long and 33 meters wide, could not stop at anchor due to the storm and sank when another ship collided with her port side after she started to sail.

The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure made a statement today and said: “It has been learned that the Marshall flagged OMEGA ship sank off the coast of Shanghai due to a collision with the ship named MIRABELLA, and 21 seafarers, 16 of whom were Turkish, who left the ship with lifeboats, were taken from the sea by the colliding ship.

The 3rd Captain of the ship has been contacted and coordination is being made with our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MRCC China for the evacuation of the sailors who are in good health. Get well soon.”
