Aquaculture became the first food product to pass the 1 billion dollar threshold in the Aegean Region.

Aegean fishermen’s 11-month exports exceeded 1 billion dollars. Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association increased its exports from 984 million dollars in the 11-month period of 2022 to 1 billion 40 million dollars with an increase of 6 percent in the same period of 2023.

While the aquaculture sector was the only food product group within the Aegean Exporters’ Association that exceeded the 1 billion dollar threshold, it received a 21 percent share of EİB’s 5 billion 180 million dollar food product exports in the 11-month period of 2023.

Aegean fishermen exported two out of every three fish exported by Turkey.

While Turkey exported aquatic products worth 1 billion 540 million dollars in the January-November period of 2023, Aegean fishermen succeeded in producing two out of every three fish.

Stating that Aegean aquaculture farmers have invested heavily in aquaculture in the last 25 years, Bedri Girit, President of the Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association, noted that they have broken new records in exports every year with their increasing capacity since the beginning of the 2000s, and that they are among the star sectors of exports. .

Stating that their aquatic product exports, which were 59 million dollars in 2000, reached 1 billion 40 million dollars in the January-November period of 2023, Girit said that they aim to close 2023 with 1 billion 150 million dollars of aquatic products exports in the Aegean Region, and 1.7 billion dollars in foreign currency throughout Turkey. He said that they would bring profit to Turkey.

Sharing the information that sea bass is the leading product in aquatic products exports with 445 million dollars, Crete said, “Our sea bream exports amounted to 346 million dollars, our Turkish salmon exports reached 149 million dollars, our trout exports reached 60 million dollars, and our other aquatic products exports reached 40 million dollars.”

Italy, England and Russia were the top three countries

Bedri Girit, President of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters Association, shared that Italy is the first country in aquatic products exports with 130 million dollars, followed by the United Kingdom with 128.6 million dollars and the Russian Federation with 127 million dollars. Aegean fishermen succeeded in exporting aquatic products worth 108 million dollars to the Netherlands and 91 million dollars to Greece.
