Ship sinks in the Sea of Marmara

A rescue operation was launched for the crew of the 69-meter cargo ship that took on water and sank southwest of İmralı Island in the Marmara Sea. The teams that went to the call for help did not find any evidence of the ship in the region.

In a statement made by the Directorate General of Coastal Safety, it was noted that KEGM-6 and KIYEM-4 fast lifeboats belonging to the General Directorate of Coastal Safety of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure were immediately directed to the scene for the 69-meter-long general cargo ship named “BATUHAN A”, which took on water in the southwest of the island.

Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş told reporters that after the incident, two teams from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety as well as a team from Bandırma district of Balıkesir were sent to the region.

Governor Demirtaş said, “Efforts are continuing intensively to rescue the crew of 6 people, who are considered to be Turkish citizens, on the ship that took on water and sank.”

Stating that the waves approached 3 meters in the area where the ship sank, Demirtaş stated that the Coast Guard Command coordinated the work at its compound in Mudanya district.

Demirtaş added that the Coast Guard Command and the General Directorate of Coastal Safety teams continue to work in the region.

In the statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure; an emergency signal was received at 06.32 from the dry cargo ship Batuhan A with 6 crew members in the Marmara Sea. TCSG 313 boat has reached the region and no evidence of the ship has been found in the region. Search and rescue activities are continuing by all relevant elements.
