In the statement made by the Canary Islands Coast Guard, it was noted that the teams working to save the irregular immigrants on the boat that sank 78 kilometers off Lanzarote Island saved 41 people, but 3 men, 3 women and a 4-year-old child were missing.
Authorities stated that 266 irregular immigrants who tried to reach the islands with 6 different boats or dinghies on October 1-2 were rescued from the sea and shared the information that two of the immigrants who were brought ashore in Lanzarote and Grand Canary were treated by medical teams.
14 thousand 976 irregular immigrants arrived in the Canary Islands
According to the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of irregular immigrants coming from the coast of North Africa to the Canary Islands increased by 19.8 percent in the January-September period of this year, compared to the same period of 2022.
In January-September 2023, 14 thousand 976 irregular immigrants arrived in the Canary Islands.
The autonomous administration of the Canary Islands is demanding more resources from the central government in Spain to host irregular immigrants and provide the necessary humanitarian aid.
