Baltic Hub Starts Construction on the Largest Terminal in the Baltic Sea - News2Sea

Baltic hub started construction on its third deep water terminal as part of Port of Gdansk on November 28th at a ceremony. The terminal, named the “T3”, will be the largest in the Baltic Sea. It will be complete by the second quarter of 2025.

A total of $467 million will be invested into the terminal. It will have a quay that will be 17.5 m deep and 717 m long. When complete, the terminal will be able to accommodate the largest container vessels in the world. An operating space of ͥ365,000 square meters is also to be constructed as a part of this project.

The construction will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the companies DEME and Budimex will construct the 360,000 square meter operating area. This area will be completely reclaimed from the sea and will increase the handling capacity of the Baltic hub from 1.5 to 4.5 million TEUs / year. This first phase will be completed by 2024, following which the terminal will be opened for commercial operations.

In the second phase, the construction of the quay wall, which is 717 m long and 17.5 m deep, will begin. This construction will commence in 2023 and is expected to end by mid-2025.

The project also involves the purchase of port equipment such as seven quay cranes capable of handling the largest vessels in the world and 20 semi-automated Rail Mounted Gantry cranes that can be operated remotely.

The terminal will be able to serve Central and Eastern Europe along with the Baltics. This will give the terminal the potential to become the largest container terminal hub in all of Europe.
