Police divers in Trabzon show environmental awareness by collecting garbage and ghost nets that harm sea creatures in the places where they train.
12 seafarers and frogmen who have been working in the Provincial Police Department Sea Port Branch Directorate Underwater Group Command since 2021 are working on a 24/7 basis.
Divers, who work in situations such as search and rescue activities in seas, streams, lakes and rivers, searching for criminal weapons with a detector in water, drowning and natural disasters, continue their training in the Black Sea throughout the year.
Divers collect the plastic and iron waste they encounter underwater during their work and bring it to the shore so that it does not harm marine creatures.
The police then leave the garbage at municipal waste collection points.
“We are working to leave a cleaner world to our children, the future of our country.”
Sea Port Deputy Branch Manager Superintendent Muhammet Cihad Tarhan said that they perform search and rescue duties in the event of natural disasters such as floods, searching for those lost in the water, removing criminal elements thrown into the sea intact and delivering them to the relevant units.
Tarhan stated that frogmen and seafarers should maintain their physical condition by diving and said, “We do training dives when we are not on duty. We also clean the seas by working on ghost nets, which pose a great danger especially to underwater creatures. We want to leave a cleaner world for our country’s future and our children.” we are working.” said.
Tarhan explained that they usually retrieve ghost nets, plastic bottles, tires, and food and beverage packaging from underwater, and continued as follows:
“While people are fishing, their fishing lines get stuck on the rocks, and while they are pulling, the line breaks, which causes the fish to get stuck, and we meet them floating dead in the water. This makes us deeply sad. After all, we are not the only ones in the world, other living creatures also live and we have to respect them. “It is very important for our people to live responsibly and without polluting the sea.”
Tarhan pointed out that underwater bottom cleaning is not one of the main purposes in their job descriptions and said, “When we encounter incidents that pollute the sea during our dives, we do what is necessary with the sensitivity of being human first and police second.” he said.
