A new container terminal is under construction near MONTREAL, with the financial support of the Canadian Federal government. An investment of up to US$110 million has been earmarked for this project, which, upon completion, will bolster the container handling capacity of the Port of MONTREAL by 55%.

The US$110 million funding has been allocated through the National Trade and Corridors Fund for the Montreal Port Authority.

The construction plans for the new terminal include a 675-meter dock and adjacent ship handling areas, a railway network featuring a freight transfer point linked to the national railway network, road access, and a container handling yard. Situated in Contrecoeur, a city on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River, roughly 40 miles Northeast of Montreal, this new terminal is expected to handle 1.15 million containers per year and generate approximately US$103 million annually.

The Port Authority will oversee the marine work phase of the project, including tasks such as dredging and dock construction. Subsequently, the Port Authority intends to issue a Request for Proposals in 2024 to identify a private partner for constructing the container yard, buildings, facilities, rail connections, and other associated components.
