Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, successfully delivered a new cruise ship, the “CELEBRITY ASCENT,” to Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises, on November 7th. Concurrently, the shipyard commenced construction on the fifth and final vessel in the series.

The handover of the 141,420 gross ton ship involved formalities such as the signing of ownership transfer documents, changing the flag on the ship to reflect its new registration country, and celebratory events, including toasting on the ship’s expansive three-story plaza.

On November 8th, the ship embarked on a 10-day journey from France to Freeport in the Bahamas, eventually making its way to Florida. The CELEBRITY ASCENT is scheduled to embark on its first cruise from Port Everglades to the Caribbean on December 3rd, with plans to spend the winter cruising in the Caribbean before transitioning to the Mediterranean in April 2024.

Although the order for the ship was placed in December 2016, the steel cutting ceremony took place two years ago, and ship assembly commenced in July 2022.

The ship is a part of Royal Caribbean’s Edge class of cruise ships and will feature similar luxuries and amenities as the other ships. It has a length of 1073 feet, a beam of 128 feet and a draft of 27 feet. It can accommodate 3,835 passengers in 1,646 cabins and is supported by a crew of 1,468. The ship has a top speed of about 22knots.

Additionally, the shipyard conducted the steel cutting ceremony for the fifth and final vessel in the Edge series, named “Celebrity Xcel,” which is scheduled to enter service in November 2025.
