A Chinese-flagged cargo ship sank in the Tatar Strait off the Russian island of Sakhalin.

The cargo ship, which was stated to be loaded with 29 thousand tons of aluminum, gave a distress signal on February 23 due to water entering the bow and bow tanks 42 miles south of Vanino port.

An inspection by the Otto Schmidt rescue ship on February 24 found a 2 m x 1.5 m hole in hold area 1. Attempts were made to close the hole and repair other damage. However, the flooding in the hull continued. The ship, which could not be prevented from taking water, completely sank this morning.

The crew of 21 people, citizens of the People’s Republic of China, taken on the Otto Schmidt rescue ship, was rescued. The crew was reported to be in good health.
