CMA CGM recently announced a substantial $600 million investment towards the enhancement of its newly acquired terminals in the Port of NEW YORK and New Jersey as part of its New York Expansion plan.
In December 2022, CMA CGM successfully acquired GCT Bayonne and GCT New York, following an agreement with their former operator, Global Container Terminals. These two strategically located terminals are situated in Bayonne, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York. At the time of the acquisition, CMA CGM revealed plans to double their annual throughput capacity of 2 million TEUs.
At a launch party on October 11th, 2023, these terminals were renamed Port Liberty New York and Port Liberty Bayonne. Presently, the Bayonne terminal encompasses 167 acres and boasts a 2,700-foot berth featuring advanced automation and the capability to accommodate vessels with up to 18,000 TEUs. On the other hand, the Staten Island terminal covers 187 acres and includes an in-dock rail service, a 66,400-square-foot refrigerated warehouse, and a contiguous 3,012-foot berth equipped with six post-Panamax cranes.
CMA CGM’s plans entail an 80% increase in the capacity of both terminals, along with the development of the third berth in the Bayonne terminal. This development includes deepening the berth to 55 feet, which would enable the handling of even larger vessels. Furthermore, CMA CGM has forged partnerships with the states of New Jersey and New York to enhance the rail and road infrastructure connecting these ports, fostering economic growth and creating approximately 1,000 new union jobs.
With these additions, CMA CGM now boasts ownership of seven terminals in the United States.
