With the next delivery of box ships, COSCO, the world’s largest shipowner according to DWT, will enter an elite club and become the fourth cruise company in the world to operate a fleet of more than 3 million slots.
The state-run Chinese giant is less than 2,000 slots away from entering the 3 million TEU club, according to data from Alphaliner.
COSCO joins Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), Maersk and CMA CGM in the over 3 million TEU segment.
MSC has extended its lead at the top of the carrier rankings with its current fleet reaching 5.36 million TEU, up from 4.61 million TEU at the beginning of January, according to the latest data from Linerlytica, and predicts third-place CMA CGM will overtake Maersk by 2026.
