King Abdulaziz port in Dammam, Saudi Arabia handled a container volume of 199,609 TEUs in August 2022. This marks the highest monthly container volume in the port’s history. The port’s previous record was set in June 2022 and was 11,031 TEUs less than the current record.
Saudi Ports Authority, which manages the port, stated that the implementation of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy in Saudi Arabia is to be credited for the rise in the export and import volumes. This strategy is aimed at turning the country into a global logistics hub.
King Abdulaziz port has 43 berths that are fully equipped with modern cargo handling equipment. There are two general cargo terminals and a full-scale container terminal in the port. King Abdulaziz port is a key logistics hub in the Arabian gulf as it plays an important role in promoting trade in the country’s eastern and central regions.
The port re-engineered its transshipment cargo handling processes and launched new transshipment services to connect with ports in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries and East Asia in 2021. The implementation of these changes resulted in a 142.72% growth in the port’s container volume. The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) is further developing King Abdulaziz port’s infrastructure, increasing its capacity and enhancing the port’s operational efficiency. After the completion of this project, the 43 berths in the port will be able to accommodate giant vessels and will be able to handle 105 million tons annually.
