European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that they will prepare a new package of measures against the problems in the European wind energy sector, accelerate the permit processes and improve the tender system.
Von der Leyen made a speech titled “State of the Union” at the European Parliament (EP) General Assembly session held in Strasbourg.
Pointing out that the European wind industry has recently encountered unique challenges, von der Leyen said, “We will work in close cooperation with the industry and member countries to put forward a European Wind Energy Package.” said.
“We will further accelerate the permitting processes for wind investments. We will improve EU-wide tender systems in this field. We will focus on talent, access to finance and stable supply chains.” Using her statements, von der Leyen said that in the future, they aim to make production in clean technology sectors such as steel, batteries and electric vehicles in Europe.
The EP General Assembly yesterday approved increasing the 2030 renewable energy usage target from 32 percent to 42.5 percent as part of the EU’s plans to combat climate change and end dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
The European wind energy sector was demanding more support in investments and permitting processes to meet the Union’s renewable energy targets.
Investments in offshore wind power plants, especially in EU countries, were at their lowest level in the last 10 years last year due to rising costs and fluctuations in energy markets.
