Russian reefer SARONIC BREEZE suffered explosion at night Oct 26 in the Pacific, some 25 nm east of southeast Hokkaido, while en route from Busan Korea to Bering sea, to collect fish from fishing vessels. There were wielding works in one of the compartments, and according to preliminary report, acetylene cylinders exploded. Explosion tore off compartment’s steel door, fitter was hit in the head and died on the spot. The ship stopped and drifted for a short time, then sailed to nearby Yuzno-Kurilsk port, Kunashir island, and anchored at Yuzhno-Kurilsk anchorage. She left anchorage on Oct 27, probably resuming voyage after body was transferred to the shore.
