On December 7th, China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of CSSC, delivered the “CMA CGM BAHIA” to CMA CGM, marking the first of a new class of LNG-fueled containerships for the company.

The CMA CGM BAHIA weights 145,650 dwt and has a maximum capacity of 13,200 TEU. Spanning 336 meters in length and 51 meters in beam, the vessel is outfitted with a 14,000-cubic-meter LNG fuel tank and a GTT Mark III containment system. The ship has a top speed of 21 knots and is registered in Malta.

A highlight of the ship is the first-ever inclusion of the CMD-WinGD9X9DF-2.0 main engine, a cutting-edge technology by CSSC marketed for its intelligent exhaust gas control. This engine is designed to reduce methane slip by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by 28% when in gas mode.

Among its efficiency-focused features, the ship incorporates a wind deflector on the bow, reducing fuel consumption by an estimated 2 to 4%. Additionally, an energy-saving device enhances propulsion efficiency, potentially saving 1-1.5% of energy.

This vessel is the first of a series of six ordered in a $2.3 billion deal by CMA CGM revealed in April 2021. These 13,000 TEU ships are set to be the largest dual-fuel containerships on the South America route.

The ship’s service route originates in China, making stops in Hong Kong and Singapore before journeying to Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian ports. This extensive route encompasses 17 ports, offering weekly sailings with a 91-day duration per journey.
