LNG vessel Extremadura Knutsen
Norwegian shipping company Knutsen has taken delivery of the new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carrier, “PARIS KNUTSEN,” built by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI). Shell has chartered the vessel.
“PARIS KNUTSEN” is the seventh addition to Knutsen’s Shell Series, boasting a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. These LNG carriers feature dual-fuel X-DF engines, air lubrication systems, shaft-based generators for auxiliary power, and boil-off management plants, with the reliquefication technology for the ship provided by the Finnish technology group Wärtsilä.
Knutsen ordered “PARIS KNUTSEN” in July 2021 at a reported cost of $199 million. The preceding vessels in Knutsen’s Shell Series, including “EXTREMADURA KNUTSEN” (the sixth vessel), were delivered in February 2023, and “HUELVA KNUTSEN” and “FERROL KNUTSEN” (the fourth and fifth vessels) were delivered in October 2022 and January 2023, respectively.
Knutsen has recently initiated a Joint Development Project with partners like Lloyd’s Register, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering. This project aims to comprehensively study the entire lifecycle of an LNG carrier, encompassing aspects such as raw material extraction, decommissioning, recycling, equipment/component manufacture, transportation to shipyards, and final commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
