kongsberg achieves emissions reductions for hurtigruten ship

Kongsberg Maritime has partnered with shipyard Myklebust Verft to convert three Hurtigruten ships to hybrid technology with an investment value of approximately €100 million.

Kongsberg Maritime has achieved a 23% reduction in CO 2 emissions on the 121-metre cruise ship MS Richard With, owned by coastal cruise operator and adventure travel company Hurtigruten.

The ship completed an extensive refit using Kongsberg Maritime engineering and technology last summer, completing its first year of return to service.

Last year, Kongsberg Maritime partnered with shipyard Myklebust Verft to convert three Hurtigruten ships to hybrid technology, promising emissions reductions and quieter operations. Built in 1993, MS Richard With was the first of three ships to be relaunched in August last year. The second ship, MS Kong Harald, returned to service in May and the last ship, MS Nordlys, will be completed in 2025.

The project is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with an investment value of approximately 100 million euros.

“We have built our last fossil fuel ship for Norwegian Coast Express,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten Coastal Express. “We have the opportunity to upgrade the fleet and provide ships with the best of today’s technology. “Also, renovating a ship is more environmentally friendly than scrapping it and building a new ship.”
