La Méridionale, the France-based shipping company, has announced plans to construct two environmentally friendly luxury vessels to modernize its operations in Corsica.

La Méridionale has unveiled the designs of the ships and reported that they are scheduled to enter service in the first quarter of 2027. The company had previously expressed its intention to replace the older vessels in its fleet.

The company currently operates four vessels in its fleet: the “KALLISTE” of 30,700 gross tons, the “PELAGOS” of 21,850 gross tons, the “GIROLATA” of 28,400 gross tons, and the “PIANA” of 42,180 gross tons.

The two new vessels will surpass the size of the older ones, having a capacity of 1000 passengers each. They will be 590 feet in length and offer more than 2000 linear meters for freight. Similar to other ships in the company’s fleet, these vessels will be registered in France.

Equipped with two 10.5 MW electric propulsion motors and optimized 5-blade propellers, the ships will incorporate various energy-saving features, including an optimized hull design, heat recovery systems, and energy-efficient cabin design. The two new vessels will house 264 passenger cabins, accommodating two to four people, with 21 cabins featuring private balconies.

Operating primarily on LNG, the new ships have plans to transition to other alternative fuels in the future, such as biogas and synthetic methane, as they become more widely available.

The CMA CGM Group acquired the ferry operator La Méridionale in June 2023 as part of its strategy to diversify operations.
