A joint venture between Maersk’s terminals unit and Croatia’s ENNA Group has begun construction of the 380 million Euro ($405 million) Rijeka Gateway terminal, the largest investment in the history of Croatia’s Rijeka port.

The container terminal, which will be operational in 2025, will be developed in two phases and more than 200 million Euros will be invested in the first phase over the next two years. This move, which will create employment for 300 people at the terminal, will be followed by an additional investment of 180 million Euros in the next 10 years.

Maersk’s Netherlands-based port operator APM Terminals (APMT) and Enna Logic signed a 50-year concession agreement in November 2021 to design, build and operate a terminal on Croatia’s Northern Adriatic coast.

APMT said Rijeka Gateway will be the first port in the Adriatic with remote-controlled, electric container cranes and a berth depth of 20 m, suitable to host the world’s largest container ships. The port, which can handle a total of 650,000 TEU containers per year, is expected to increase this figure to over 1 million TEU per year in the next phase.

The terminal, which will be the 66th terminal in APMT’s portfolio, will serve as the main entry point to hinterland countries and markets. The company also added that it will have a key role in the development of the local economy, as most of the project contracts have been and will continue to be fulfilled by domestic companies.
