MAERSK
The Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced that they will halt all operations in Syria due to challenges in complying with sanctions. It intends to wind down its operations and cease calls to Syrian ports starting from December 1st.
Syria has long been under sanctions from the EU, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland, primarily due to the ongoing civil war since 2011 and the oppression of its civilians. These sanctions have significantly constrained humanitarian aid efforts and restricted business activities to and from the country. Maersk had conducted limited operations in Syria, strictly adhering to sanction guidelines.
However, Maersk has now declared that navigating these sanctions has become increasingly complex, leading to the decision to entirely halt their operations. The MAERSK NARMADA will be the final Maersk vessel to call on a Syrian port on November 28th.
The company has assured the fulfillment of existing commitments, ensuring that existing bookings to and from Syria will be honored.
