It was reported that Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela proposed the appointment of a commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean in the European Union (EU) Commission to better combat the challenges in the region.
According to the Times of Malta newspaper, the Maltese Prime Minister, who attended the “European leaders” meeting held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, made a proposal for the EU Commission there.
While Abela listed Malta’s priorities to the leaders who came together to prepare for the EU’s strategic agenda for the 2024-2029 period, he stated that the Mediterranean region has great potential and suggested the appointment of a European Commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean in the Commission.
Pointing out that Malta depends on sea and air transportation to stay connected with the rest of Europe, Abela noted that the EU should take action in critical sectors that provide connectivity in order to continue the fight against climate change.
Abela stated that the EU should also solve the problem of access to medicine.
