The Long Beach police department has reported that a heated argument between two crewmembers at the port of Long Beach escalated and ended up with a crew member stabbing the other at 1:45 AM on Monday.
The victim was found with a stab wound on his upper body, however the wound was not grievous and the victim’s condition was declared to be stable after the paramedics took him to a nearby hospital.
The police received the report of the incident at Pier G’s 1000 block in the port of Long Beach. The suspect arrested in the case is identified as Anali Nanto, 48 years of age, and is an Indonesian national. He is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and the bail is set at $30,000.
The vessel on which the victim and the perpetrator were employed has not been identified.
Unfortunately, violence among crewmembers is not something new. Crewmembers living together in hazardous and stressful situations can develop tensions amongst themselves. The FBI reports that, while most cases of physical assault in a maritime environment happen aboard cruise ships, fights among crewmembers of commercial goods vessels are not a very uncommon occurrence.
