On the early morning of July 7th, 2023, a fire erupted in one of the five engines of the cruise ship “MARELLA DISCOVERY.” As a result, the ship was compelled to abort its current voyage and return to its previous port of call, AMBER COVE, in the Dominican Republic.
Swift action was taken, and the fire was promptly extinguished, with no reported injuries among the crew or passengers. However, following the initial assessment of the incident, the remaining portion of the ongoing sailing and the subsequent voyage scheduled to commence on July 9th had to be canceled.
The engine fire occurred at approximately 1:30 AM on Friday, July 7th, shortly after the ship had departed from its previous port of call, AMBER COVE, at 6:00 PM the previous day. Firefighting teams responded efficiently, successfully extinguishing the fire without any further complications.
Upon returning to AMBER COVE, the ship underwent inspection by third-party inspectors who had to travel to the Dominican Republic. The resulting delays made it impossible for the ship to proceed with its planned cruise on July 9th or continue the interrupted voyage.
To address the situation, Marella Cruises, the cruise line in charge, is arranging for over 1800 cruise passengers to be flown back to their respective homes. Additionally, Marella Cruises will be providing compensation to the affected guests. Passengers who embarked on the cruise that commenced on July 2nd and concluded prematurely due to the engine fire will receive a full refund. Furthermore, those who booked the subsequent cruise as a continuation of the interrupted voyage for a 14-night cruise will also be eligible for a full refund.
