The Port of PRINCE RUPERT in Canada is embarking on an ambitious project to expand its terminal capacity and introduce rail-to-container capabilities for the transloading of various export products. This endeavor, known as the “Ridley Island Export Logistics Project,” is set to receive a substantial investment of C$750 million (US$550 million).

The project is a collaborative effort involving the federal government of the province and the freight and logistics company, Ray-Mont Logistics. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and should be completed by the third quarter of 2026.

This significant development will unfold on a 108-acre greenfield site on Ridley Island. Ray-Mont Logistics will be responsible for the construction and operation of this project, providing a capacity of 400,000 TEU for agricultural, forestry, and plastic resin products.

One crucial aspect of the project is the expansion of the Ridley Island Road Rail utility corridor. This expansion will grant direct access to the island terminal from the main CN network, allowing trains up to 10,000 feet in length to reach the terminal. The introduction of this new dedicated export logistics platform is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Canadian exporters.

Furthermore, the project includes the electrification of the terminal, rail optimization, and a reduction in the use of drayage trucks.

PRINCE RUPERT is a crucial gateway port for Canada, having already handled an impressive 18 million tonnes of foreign cargo in the first nine months of 2023. Its selection as the site for this project is due to its distinction as the deepest port in North America and its strategic advantage in providing the shortest route to Asia.
