Container ship CHIAPAS STAR developed heavy starboard list at Mazatlan port, Mexico, early in the morning Sep 11, when she was about to leave for La Paz, Baja California Sur. Ballasting said to be the cause of stability loss, which led to heavy list or probably, capsizing. Touching bottom is mentioned, she might be resting on bottom, by starboard side. Now, it is interesting, what exactly caused faulty ballasting? Might it be “ballast water management” regulations, notorious for problem they create for crew and for ships’ stability?
The crew left the ship, salvage pending.
