OX2 and Alandsbanken Fondbolag, a mutual fund subsidiary of the Bank of Aland, have begun a feasibility study for the planning and construction of a “Mega Grön Hamn” (Mega Green Port). The port will be located at the site of the current Port of LANGNAS in Aland.
OX2 and Alandsbanken Fondbolag are already in a partnership for the development of the Noatun North and Noatun South offshore wind power plants in the Aland Archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The Mega Green Port will serve as a hub for these power plants and several other companies, including the Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and EuroMekanik, are involved in a consulting capacity for the project.
Upon completion, the Mega Green Port will act as a green node for the Nordic region and focus primarily on providing services for the shipping segment. It will provide fuel for the e-shipping industry, and construction logistics for wind power projects, and create opportunities for new business operations and job creation.
The estimated capacity requirement for Aland is 3000 MW and the port will produce hydrogen as a fuel source for the shipping industry. The project company is currently in negotiations with various companies in various sectors, including manufacturing, information technology, and agriculture, which will be dependent on green energy production.
The feasibility study, which is expected to last 12 months, will provide a better understanding of the technical, practical, and financial factors of the Mega Green Project. The findings of the study will be released to the public on an ongoing basis.
