On December 25th, passengers aboard the Costa Cruises “COSTA SERENA” spotted several individuals wearing lifejackets from the ship’s balcony. This prompted the vessel to swiftly notify the Indian Coast Guard, which led to a successful rescue operation.

The cruise ship was embarking on its first international cruise itinerary in India after several years, sailing between Mumbai and Cochin. Upon receiving concerned reports from passengers about stranded individuals, Captain Andrea Bardi steered the ship off its course to initiate a search and rescue mission.

The 114,500 gross ton, 290-meter-long cruise ship promptly adjusted its speed and direction to locate the stranded individuals. In addition to altering the course, the cruise ship immediately alerted the Indian Coast Guard, providing the approximate location of the stranded individuals. The Coast Guard arrived a few hours later and assumed control of the search and rescue operation.

The Coast Guard successfully rescued the individuals who turned out to be five fishermen. Following the rescue, the fishermen were transported to Mumbai Hospital for urgent medical attention. As of the latest update, all five fishermen are reported to be in stable condition.

Upon reaching Cochin on December 26th, the captain and crew of the ship were honored with an appreciation plaque from the Indian Coast Guard, recognizing their commendable efforts in rescuing the distressed fishermen.
