Port of Melbourne Proceeds With Restoration of Swanson Dock - News2Sea

Stage one of the Swanson Dock remediation project has been awarded to McConnell Dowell by the Port of Melbourne. This contract for the completion of Stage 1 also includes the upgrade and remediation of the wharf structure in place.

Swanson Dock West International terminal has a 944-meter wharf and three container handling berths. These structures were constructed in various stages between the 1960s and the 1980s.

Port of Melbourne CEO, Saul Cannon stated that the Swanson Dock West wharf structures had to be remediated and upgraded so that they could continue to handle containers for the next 50 years. He also noted that major remediation for the wharf structure was overdue, as different sections of the wharf are of varying ages and constructions. Sections of the wharf are either close to, or have served beyond their typical design life of 30 years.

The terminal has three berths and the remediation plan has been designed in three stages. This ensures that two berths will remain operational at every stage of the process.
