Mersin Chamber of Shipping took another important step towards bringing maritime education in Mersin to international standards.
Mersin Chamber of Shipping Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School (MDTO MTAL), which was built by Mersin Chamber of Shipping (MDTO) and integrated into the education system, became the first maritime vocational high school to open a preparatory class among the schools implementing the Anatolian vocational program in Turkey.
MDTO’s efforts with TOBB to open a preparatory class at the maritime high school of which it is the patron, yielded results. As a result of the studies carried out between MDTO, TOBB and the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of National Education decided to open an English preparatory class at MDTO MTAL starting from the 2024-2025 academic year.
Increasing the quality of education and foreign language proficiency at MDTO MTAL has been on the agenda of MDTO for a long time.
The Chamber, which made many improvements to increase the education and equipment quality of MDTO MTAL, which was selected as a pilot school in Mersin within the scope of the “Vocational Education Cooperation Protocol” signed between MEB, TOBB and TOBB ETÜ, lastly focused on increasing the foreign language skills of the students.
Based on the fact that English is the universal language of maritime, MDTO has pioneered the provision of additional English lessons in the school curriculum as of 2021, ensuring that internationally competent instructors attend the course together with the school’s existing foreign language teachers and supporting the students with foreign publications.
Seeing the success of the implemented program, MDTO Management started to take initiatives with TOBB. As a result of the work carried out by TOBB with the Ministry of Education, the request of the Chamber management was met positively and it was decided to open a preparatory class at the school starting from the 2024-2025 academic year. With this decision, MDTO MTAL became the first maritime vocational high school in Turkey to open a preparatory class among the schools implementing the Anatolian vocational program in our country.
Stating that they were very pleased with the positive evaluation of their proposals, MDTO Chairman Cihat Lokmanoğlu said that knowing English is of great importance in the international maritime profession.
Stating that due to the international nature of the maritime profession, one of the most important elements of success in the profession is mastery of English, Lokmanoğlu said, “This new step will improve our students’ ability to learn and use foreign languages, and our students will gain experience in using English effectively, theoretically and practically. The opening of the preparatory class is a result of our determination to improve the quality of maritime education in Mersin. “I would like to thank the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey and our Ministry of National Education for approaching our demands positively,” he said.
