Japanese shipping companies are changing their routes after the attacks in the Red Sea.
Maritime companies in Japan are changing their routes after the recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthis against commercial ships in the Red Sea.
Attacks by the Houthis in Yemen endanger passage through the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and through which 12 percent of global trade passes.
According to the news of Japanese state broadcaster NHK, “Nippon Yusen” and “Mitsui OSK Lines” companies changed the route of transport ships departing and arriving in Europe.
It was reported that the route change was made “with the possibility that the Houthis might target shipping linked to Israel” and the ships were directed to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
It was reported in the national media that Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Ocean Network Express companies also changed their shipping routes due to Houthi attacks.
The fact that new routes will cause delivery delays and transportation costs increases concerns that they may cause a “supply chain crisis” in the global economy.
