RWE, the Germany-based energy company, is set to transfer control of the LNG import infrastructure near Hamburg, situated in Brunsbüttel, to the German government on January 1st, 2024.

The terminal was swiftly brought live as one of three FSRUs (Floating Storage and Regasification Units) aimed at replacing Russia’s gas supply.

Around ten months after the FSRU went live, RWE reports that the infrastructure is operating without a hitch and is ready to be handed over to the newly formed Deutsche Energy Terminal that has been set up by the German government, especially for the operation of the LNG terminals.

RWE played a crucial role in collaborating with the German government to ensure a consistent LNG supply. As per the government’s request, the energy company chartered two FSRUs, among them the “HOEGH GANNET,” which is currently stationed in Brunsbüttel.

The FSRU is capable of handling up to 170,000 cubic meters of gas deliveries from tankers, and it regulates the LNG before integrating it into Gasunie’s existing network.

RWE is in the planning stages for a permanent LNG import terminal at Brunsbüttel. The European Commission has sanctioned a 40 million Euro support measure from Germany for this new land-based terminal. It is slated to commence operations by 2026 with an annual 10 billion cubic meters capacity.
