Sanmar's electric tugs join the SAAM Towage fleet - News2Sea

Two sister tugboats built by Sanmar Maritime are on their way to be delivered to South American tugboat operator SAAM Towage.

Sister tugboats built under the names “DYNAMO” and “DYNAMO ll” set out from Tuzla Port to Vancouver with the cargo ship BBC EMERALD in the middle of this month. These tugs will be the first electric tugs operated by SAAM Towage. They were renamed “SAAM VOLTA” and “CHIEF DAN GEORGE” by their new buyers.

Based on the Sanmar-exclusive ElectRA 2300SX design by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd, part of a series hailed by the maritime media as ‘Tugboats of the Future’, the DYNAMO and DYNAMO ll are powered by two Li-ion battery banks to become 100% electric, zero-emission vessels. was brought.

Measuring 23.4 m in total, with a width of 11.85 m and a maximum draft of 5.5, these compact tugs can reach a pulling power of 70 tonnes, while at full capacity, each reduces CO2 emissions by 2,600 metric tonnes per year.

In a move that further enhances their eco-friendly green credentials, the tugs will be charged using clean energy from British Columbia’s power grid.

SAAM Towage operates in South, Central and North America, including nine ports in British Columbia.

After leaving Sanmar’s purpose-built shipyard in Tuzla and successfully completing final seaworthiness tests, DYNAMO and DYNAMO ll were towed to BBC EMERALD in a maneuver requiring two 400-tonne cranes.

Due to restrictions on the number of ships using the Panama Canal due to low water levels in Gatun Lake, BBC EMERALD will reach Vancouver via the Strait of Magellan, a journey that will take approximately 60 days.

Sanmar, Robert Allan Ltd and SAAM announced that they worked in close cooperation at every stage of the TowageDYNAMO project. “They represent the way to move towards more sustainable operations and take our business into the future,” said Pablo Cáceres, Engineering and Development Manager at SAAM Towage.

Sanmar Shipyards Commercial Director Rüçhan Çıvgın said:

“Our ElectRA range represents a major advance in our industry’s effort to reduce our industry’s impact on the environment. I am proud that Sanmar is pioneering a sustainable towage industry that is environmentally conscious. As you can imagine, the need to protect our planet is increasingly on the agenda of both business and regulatory bodies.” “Our Tugboats of the Future product is attracting great interest from operators around the world.”
