Sefine Shipyard delivered M/V Nerea built for Caronte & Tourist.
Sefine Shipyard successfully delivered M/V Nerea (NB54), built for Italian Caronte & Tourist, to its owner. The passenger ferry, classified by RINA, will carry passengers between Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.
The ferry, whose construction contract was signed in February 2021, was launched in October 2022. The design of the 8,300 gross tons SOLAS compliant LNG-hybrid ro-pax ferry is signed by Italy-based NAOS Ship and Boat Design. NAOS also took part in Nerea’s hull optimization and tank tests.
The 110-meter-long and 20-meter-wide ferry will continue to the mainland port of Naples on certain days of the week, connecting Milazzo on the northeast coast of Sicily with the Aeolian Islands. The ferry, which will replace the 1992-built Laurana ferry, will carry 800 passengers and crew, as well as 115 vehicles and cargo. Sleeper cabins will also be built on the ferry for disabled and sick passengers. In addition, a single vehicle deck with a height of 5 meters will be placed at the stern to stack dangerous cargo.
The diesel/LNG-electric ferry will be powered by four dual-fuel engines, two with an output of 2,900kW each and two with an output of 1,300kW each. The 250m² solar panels to be added to the ferry’s design will charge its 1,000 kW batteries. Eolie will be able to reach a speed of 16.5 knots. Additionally, the two bow thrusters to be added will increase the ferry’s mobility in small ports.
