The first liquefied hydrogen carrier, the ‘SUISO FRONTIER,’ has recently arrived in Singapore. Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries designed this innovative vessel, and Shell Japan currently operates it.
Upon its arrival in Singapore, docked at the Shell Energy Chemicals Park on Pulau Bukom. The ship stores hydrogen in a cryogenic storage system with approximately 1,250 cubic meters capacity. The hydrogen is stored at an extremely low temperature of -253 degrees Celsius. Notably, the vessel successfully completed its inaugural voyage between Australia and Japan in February 2022. It has now entered a demonstration phase, during which its performance, reliability, and system integrity will be thoroughly assessed through load and unload cycles. This phase also aims to accumulate valuable operational experience.
Operation of the SUISO FRONTIER is overseen by Shell Japan as part of the Hydrogen Energy Supply-chain Technology Research Association (HySTRA) project, which receives funding from the Japanese government and various partners.
Teo Ding Dih, the Acting Minister for Transport, highlighted that Singapore’s National Hydrogen Strategy was unveiled towards the end of 2022. He further emphasized the significant potential of hydrogen as a fuel source and its ability to be produced at scale using renewable resources. This makes hydrogen an ideal candidate for supporting the transition to a zero-carbon future.”
