stena line contracts wärtsilä to convert its ferries to methanol

Stena Line, a ferry operator from Sweden, has initiated the conversion of some of its vessels to utilize Methanol as fuel. The modifications will be carried out by the Finnish technology company Wärtsilä. Although the number of ships to be converted has not been disclosed, the conversions are scheduled to occur in 2025.

Converting these ships will involve several aspects, including modifying fuel supply systems, engine adjustments, and integrating new installations with the existing ship systems. Wärtsilä secured the bookings for these conversions in June 2023.

Stena Line made history in 2015 by becoming the first ferry operator to operate a methanol-fueled ferry, namely the “STENA GERMANICA,” which was also converted by Wärtsilä.

Unlike hydrogen and other fuels that require pressurization and temperature control, Methanol is a liquid at room temperature and pressure. This characteristic makes it highly practical and convenient for usage. Additionally, Methanol can be used in diesel engines, making the conversion process more affordable and economically viable.

By converting these ships to use Methanol as fuel, Stena Line aims to ensure compliance with current and forthcoming regulations such as the Carbon Intensity Indicator, FuelEU Maritime, and the IMO 2050 GHG reduction target.
