stm nationalized another critical system on ships

The Roll Damping System, which enables ships to operate safely in all weather and sea conditions and was procured from abroad, was produced with domestic facilities for the first time.

Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc. has added a new one to its critical localization and nationalization steps in the field of military maritime.

With the cooperation between STM and Robotek Automation Technologies, the system that enables surface warships to continue their combat missions safely by absorbing the forces they are exposed to due to external factors such as wind, waves, currents and storms has been nationalized.

The system will be integrated into two corvettes within the scope of an export project carried out by STM. Thus, the Yaw Damping System will perform its first task in an export project. The system is expected to be integrated into MİLGEM 6th, 7th and 8th ships within the scope of Turkey’s national frigate project.

The Roll Damping System, developed to provide resistance to the ship’s excessive yawing in both directions, provides ships with the ability to operate in rough seas. The system, which increases the safety of the personnel and the operational efficiency of the platform, minimizes the movements that occur as a result of the difficult sea conditions and sudden maneuvering movements that the ship will encounter in navigation and combat situations. The Roll Damping System, which supports helicopter operations, weapon stabilization during shooting, and supply, material and personnel transfer at sea, stands out with its design resistant to harsh sea conditions and automatic and adaptive operating features.

“Like a fish’s fin”

STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz said that they are taking step by step to realize a fully independent Turkey in defense under the leadership of the Presidency of Defense Industries.

Emphasizing that the main task given to STM, especially in military maritime projects, is to gradually increase the national contribution share, Güleryüz pointed out that the local-national contribution share, which was around 15-20 percent in the first Ada class corvettes, reached 80-85 percent.

Stating that their work will continue until the ships are 100 percent domestic, Güleryüz stated that the Roll Damping System was also included in the scope of nationalization projects while it was purchased from abroad.

Stating that the system can be thought of as a fish’s fin, Güleryüz said:

“The Roll Damping System is one of the important critical systems that provides adaptive reactions to support the ship’s stable and safe progress during its transfer and can ensure the safety of the ship in this sense. It was a solution that could be purchased from abroad. After these studies, our existing ships will be developed with different tonnage models from now on. We have gained engineering competence for ships of different sizes.

We always say this: We want to grow together with our ecosystem. The stronger the ecosystem, the safer and stronger we feel as a platform developer and producer. Especially our export motivation is very high. We think that we can realize all kinds of solutions, platforms and integration activities abroad by taking the power of the ecosystem behind us. “The Yaw Damping System is a product we developed with one of the strong engineering companies in our ecosystem.”

It will provide many gains

Stating that this system can provide much more precise support in terms of strabilization when the ship is about to fire, Güleryüz also stated that it is an important competence in helicopter operations that will ensure that the helicopter lands on the platform safely.

Emphasizing that they are happy to bring a new technology to the country with an advanced engineering solution, Güleryüz said:

“We will install it on the two corvettes we exported. Hopefully, this solution will be used again on MİLGEM 6th, 7th and 8th ships. We have also gained the ability to adapt this competence we have acquired to all kinds of ships we will design from now on. Turkey, which is fully independent in defense, is one of our important motivations, but on the other hand, we aim to prevent the outflow of foreign currency abroad. Even if we have no problem purchasing it, we have to pay money abroad. “With all kinds of localization activities, we ensure that the resource remains in the country, and important steps have been taken in terms of bringing income to the country through exports.”
